High school senior Adonis struggles to do the right thing when his fellow football players escalate their bullying of a new classmate, Alan, who is transgendered.

"I act differently with different people. There's nothing wrong with that," I told Jeannie, across that empty space between us.

"So then who are you really - the shallow loser or the liar? God knows who you are when it's just you and your football buddies," she said from over her shoulder, without turning around to look at me.

I stood there steaming over that, as I caught my reflection in the curved aluminum crossbeams of the lunch counter. My entire body was squeezed down, short and squat, like I was looking into one of those funhouse mirrors. Only there was nothing funny about any of it.
